Gymea Community Aid & Information Service

Gymea Community Aid and Information Service

Gymea Community Aid & Information Service Inc (GCAIS) was established in 1975 by a passionate group of local residents. We are now an incorporated not-for-profit association based in Gymea which provides services across the Sutherland Shire and into St George. We have a small paid staff and dedicated volunteer team, overseen by a volunteer Management Committee elected from among our members. GCAIS receives funding from a range of local, state and commonwealth government agencies and relies heavily on community support to fund and run our services.

GCAIS is the only Shire based organisation funded to deliver Migrant and Settlement Services. Our offering not only caters to refugees, it also provides social and one on one support for our seniors where Australia was not their country of origin.

Similar to the Migrant and Settlement Services, Multicultural Services celebrates and respects differences. programs available in this service are:

  • Spanish Social Groups
  • Greek Social Groups
  • Chinese Social Groups and English Classes
  • Tai Chi sessions
  • Italian and Indian Social Groups
  • Special events such as Harmony Day, Cooking from across the Continent, World Dance Groups.

The widely recognised DriveTime provides a full program of education and practical to support refugees in getting their P1 licence. Funded by the NRMA this program has seen over 60 participants gain this license and helped them in gaining independence and employment.

Community Connections is a service which aims to provide assistance to frail-aged residents who experience difficulty with the normal tasks of daily living and are therefore at risk of premature institutionalisation. In line with the GCAIS purpose of celebrating inclusiveness, independence and participation, our programs and services are positioned to maximise our client's own goals. Programs available are:

  • Regular day outings
  • Gentle exercise
  • Men's Groups
  • One-on-one social support
  • Group activities
  • Computer courses
  • Transport
